Sagittal suture morphological variation in human archaeological populations

2021

Cranial sutures join the many bones of the skull. They are therefore points of weakness and consequently subjected to the many mechanical stresses affecting the cranium. However, the way in which this impacts their morphological complexity remains unclear. We examine the intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms of human sagittal sutures by quantifying the morphology from 107 individuals from archaeological populations spanning the Mesolithic to Middle ages, using standardized two-dimensional photographs. Results show that the most important factor determining sutural complexity appears to be the position along the cranial vault from the junction with the coronal suture at its anterior-most point …

Homicide with post mortem dismemberment of the victim with previous amputation of right lower limb: Case report and review of the literature

2018

The dismemberment of a corpse is comparatively rare in forensic medicine and usually performed with different types of sharp tools. The victim is always the victim of a homicide. Dismemberment usually occurs where the killing took place without prior planning by the perpetrator. We report a case of homicide with post mortem mutilation of the victim’s body with previous amputation of right lower limb in which the perpetrator was not identified. At autopsy, several fractures were detected on the cranial vault, and the cause of death was due to skull and brain injuries from multiple blunt force traumas.

Chronic idiopathic hyperphosphatasia with unusual dental findings: a case report

2012

Chronic idiopathic hyperphosphatasia(CIH) or juvenile Paget disease is believed to be a distinct disease characterized by an increase in the serum alkaline phosphatase, cortical thickening and bowing of the long bones, especially the femora. It is a rare autosomal recessive bone disorder, with excessive bone resorption and bone formation. Skeletal malformations in the legs may cause problems in walking and may eventually result in short stature. The radiographic appearances include widening of the diaphyses, vertebral osteoporosis, acetabular protrusion, and thickening of the skull vault. Intensive bisphosphonate treatment prevented the development of deformity and disability but there is n…

CT and MR Imaging of Lesions of Skull Base and Cranial Vault

1989

The importance of CT in examinations of the skull base, including its role in the planning of operative or radiation therapy, has long been recognized (Liliequist and Forsell 1976; Bradac et al. 1977 a, b; 1978 a, b; Hammerschlag et al. 1977; Caille et al. 1977; Lohkamp et al. 1977; Huk and Schiefer 1978; Becker et al. 1978; Weinstein et al. 1978). In the present chapter we shall review the capabilities and limitations of this modality in the diagnosis of diseases involving the bony skull base and cranial vault. A more detailed discussion of specific tumor types may be found under the appropriate headings elsewhere in the book.

Combined surgical and prosthetic approach for rehabilitation of frontonasal defect using custom made titanium implant: a case report

2011

Cranial vault deformities as a sequelae to trauma may be as high as 70%. The basic indications for cranioplasty are improvement of disfigured aesthetics and to provide protection to the intra-cranial contents. The possibility of producing custom-made implants opened a new era in the reconstructive surgery of the craniofacial deformities. The outcome of craniofacial bone reconstruction is thought to be dependent on surgical skills, quality of adjacent soft tissues, size and location of the bone defect and choice of repair method. The use of autologous bone for craniofacial reconstruction may be restricted due to limited amounts of donor bone. Combined surgical and prosthetic rehabilitation o…

Computed Tomography in Processes at the Base of the Skull and in the Skull Vault

1981

Many CT systems allow detailed examination of the bony structures of the base of the skull and the vault. Elimination of the waterbox and enlargement of the opening of the gantry allows free positioning of the head, use of coronary projections, and studies of the base of the skull. A high-resolution matrix (320 × 320 for the EMI 5005 used in most of the studies in our series) provides a high degree of accuracy. A number of authors has reported on the use of computed tomography in studying the base of the skull, especially for planning surgical proce duresor radiation therapy (Liliequist and Forsell 1976; Bradac et al. 1977 b; Bradac et al. 1977c; Bradac et al. 1978; Hammerschlag et al. 1977…

Posttraumatic chronic cranial osteomyelitis due to a superficial wound - A clinical and neuroradiological case report

2019

Background: Osteomyelitis is a progressive infection of bone and bone marrow by microorganisms, resulting in inflammatory destruction of bone, bone necrosis, and new bone formation. Skull involvement is a rare occurrence which mainly affects children with chronic inflammatory diseases of paranasal sinusitis, or malignant otitis. In adults, cranial vault osteomyelitis can occur after cranial surgery or head trauma. Case Description: We describe an unusual case of chronic cranial osteomyelitis occurred 3 months following a mild traumatic brain injury. The causative mechanisms along with the diagnostic modalities are discussed. Conclusion: Focal cranial vault osteomyelitis, in the absence of …
